Day 5: Tattenhall Marina to Chester

A short journey to Chester today. The highlight of which was a pair of kingfishers that flew along the canal in front of the boat for about 1/2 a mile. Unfortunately they don't hang around to pose for photos

Vera did a lot of the steering today including her first bridge and first passing of another boat

We moored up on the outskirts of the city to go to the big Sainsburys store, hoping to replace the bowl we had smashed back in Middlewich. Leaving the canal and walking along and across busy roads was a real jolt to the senses. The pace, noise, and lack of human interaction were in such contrast to life on the canal.

But no replacement bowl, we’ll just have to ‘fess up on our return. We did manage to get a big box of budget cornflakes, which with all of the wildlife to feed has been going down fast.

We are now in Chester after a short cruise through nice countryside.  As we got nearer the centre of Chester the towpath got busier and there was a definite buzz of excitement in the air. The canalside bars were full of people, sat outside in the warm sunshine. They were waving and cheering to us….we really felt that we were arriving somewhere special

Here we are moored beneath the city walls. This was just about the only space left. But a great site.

The Albion Inn is well worth a visit. As well as its quirky atmosphere and landlord it had a good beer range and the food was excellent.
