Despite being moored within spitting distance of the A51 we slept really well. Vera went to the loo at about 5am, and the red warning light on the toilet came on to say ‘full, no more please'.
Being next to the road wasn’t the breakfast location we wanted so I started moving to get to a quieter location. Then the Calveley service station hove into view and I was able to fill up with water:
get rid of our rubbish and recycling, and with a full water tank and an empty toilet, all was well with our world.
Then we turned a corner, left the main road behind and had a lovely tranquil breakfast spot:
Then back on the trail heading towards our first locks of the day at Bunbury. This is both a double lock, and a wide lock. Two firsts for my canal cv. There was a boat going into the lock, but they waved us in and Carol on board Oak was my lock buddy.
We tagged along them for a few miles and locks and we moored up at lunchtime just below Beeston Castle. Vera looked up at its imposing hilltop position and doubted her ability to get up there. It would be the biggest hill she had ever climbed:
Beeston Castle was fabulous, set in mature woodland and views over the whole of the Cheshire plain. Yes we made it to the top without any problem and on reflection, Vera found the climb ‘fine'
Returning to the boat we were hearing rumours that the local pub was closed on Thursdays due to covid regulations. Really? Does this virus stop at nothing? So we made the decision to travel a couple of miles to Tattenhall Marina where we were reliably informed was a bar with a chef turning out good food.
On arrival the bar was open, but not doing food. Our disappointment must have been heart rending, as he then offered to produce ham, egg and chips for us. How lucky we felt!
